Where Square is the stronger choice
- Price. Square’s Free plan is $0 for a single location and its Plus plan is $40 per location, both with no employee limit. On subscription alone, that is less than Preen Studio at $49, and less than Preen Growth for a bigger team.
- At the counter. Square sells its own card readers and terminals and supports Tap to Pay on phones. Preen doesn’t provide a card terminal.
- More than one site. Square’s Plus and Premium plans manage multiple locations.
- Selling products. Square’s Free plan includes unlimited items and stock alerts, as part of wider retail tools. Preen tracks stock on the products you sell; Square’s retail tools go further.
- If you already use Square. Your payments, reports and hardware stay in one place.
Where Preen is different
- Deposits and no-show fees on every plan. Take deposits and charge no-show and late-cancellation fees on a saved card on every Preen plan, including Free (one bookable staff member), once your Stripe account is connected. On Square they start at Plus ($40).
- Your own Stripe account. Card payments go through your own Stripe account. Preen adds nothing on top of Stripe’s rate. Stripe’s fees apply. See stripe.com/au/pricing.
- Built for hair, beauty and wellness in Australia. Priced in AUD. GST done properly.
- Moving across. Bring your clients, services, staff and diary across by CSV. Notes history, held deposits, stored cards and your old booking link don’t move.
How to choose
If you sell a lot of product, need a counter terminal, or run more than one location, Square fits better today. If you mainly take appointments, want deposits and no-show fees paid into your own Stripe account, and prefer software made for your trade, compare Preen on your own numbers. The cost guide lays out every provider’s published prices.
